Participants will see Andy Bathe, Philippe Benoit and Sarah Lejeune working up lameness cases on day 1 of the course. The instructors will discuss their approaches, findings, diagnosis and treatment options as they present all cases together on day 2 with Sue Dyson moderating. Day 3 of the course will be devoted to performing further examinations on selected cases and to improve skills.

Accreditation by the Academy for Continuous Veterinary Education in Germany (ATF) has been requested.

Program

Friday, September 24 | Practical work

Equine Clinic

  • 9:00 till 19:00 hours: Clinical lameness examination, radiographic and ultrasonographic evaluation of lameness in horses with highly experienced equine orthopedic experts.

Instructors: Andy Bathe, Philippe Benoit and Sarah Lejeune

We will work on lameness cases at the equine clinic. The day will be divided into three sessions each of 120 minutes. In each session a new case will be presented, but the group of participants changes (so the participants get an opportunity to experience each of the instructors). Horses will undergo the routine clinical examination of each instructor (including diagnostic anesthesia as necessary), radiography, and ultrasonography. Scintigraphy and magnetic resonance images will be available for some horses.

  • 09:00 – Welcome
  • 09:15 – All the horses to be examined will be presented at walk and trot in straight lines and circles so that everyone is familiar with all the horses prior to investigation by the instructors. The instructors may advise additional manoeuvres depending on the clinical presentation of each horse.  The results of the complete investigations will be presented on day 2, with discussion about diagnosis, treatment and management.

Sunday, September 26 | Theory and practical work

Equine Clinic

Instructors: Andy Bathe, Philippe Benoit, Sarah Lejeune and Sue Dyson

  • 9:00 – Follow-up examination of selected cases based on the discussion on day 2.
  • 10:30 – Coffee break
  • 11:00 – Wet labs to improve skills. Please select 2 of them: 1) Radiography; 2) Ultrasound; 3) local anesthesia (cadaver limbs); 4) objective and subjective gait analysis
  • 13:00 – Lunch
  • 14:00 – Continue wet labs
  • 16:00 – Final discussion of findings on horses examined today.
  • 17:00 – End

Andy Bathe

graduated from Cambridge University, and is a partner at Rossdales LLP, specializing in orthopedic surgery, lameness and poor performance in sport horses. He was formerly University Equine Surgeon at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge. He is a Diplomate of the ECVS and the ACVSMR and holds the RCVS Diploma in Equine orthopedics. He is Team Vet to the Japanese Three-Day Event Team, and formerly to the British Three-Day Event and Pony Showjumping Teams.

Philippe Benoit

graduated from Alfort Veterinary School in 1989 Paris, France. He did a Master in Exercise Physiology from 1990 to 1992 and was Team veterinarian of the French Jumping Team from 1992 to 1999, and in 2000 for the teams of Saudi Arabia and Brazil. He established a clinic next to Versailles (France) in 1993 and monitors since 2012 constantly show jumpers of clients in USA. His main interests are orthopedics, shoeing and back problems of horses. He became Diplomate of the American College of Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2014 and lives in Cardiff (CA – USA) practicing as a consultant with local veterinarians and a large show jumping facility.

Sue Dyson

graduated from Cambridge University, United Kingdom. She was Head of Clinical Orthopedics at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, England for many years until 2019 and is now an independent consultant. She has a passion for the investigation of poor performance using a holistic approach to the horse, tack, rider triad to try to maximize potential. Sue has also ridden at top British level in Eventing and Show Jumping and has trained horses that have competed at the Olympics and World Championships.

Sarah le Jeune

focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of lameness and various performance-related musculoskeletal injuries by an integrative whole horse approach. She is the chief of the Equine Integrative Sports Medicine Service at the University of California, Davis, and is also a board-certified equine surgeon and member of the UC Davis Equine Surgery faculty since 2003. She is certified in veterinary acupuncture, veterinary chiropractic and in thermographic imaging. She is an ACVS and ACVSMR Diplomate and the founder and chair of the International Task Force on Laterality in Sport horses.
