Participants will witness the experience and knowledge of Dominique DeClercq, Mary Durando, Lesley Young and Inge Wijnberg in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiological pathologies of horses, and especially how they set-up, run and evaluate electrocardiograms.
The contents of the recordings are:
1st Round: Resting ECG for practitioners (2:31 hours)
- Normal ECG, include basic physiology. what should be looked after, interpretation.
- What equipment should be used and how to get a good trace? Televet, GA monitor, Alivecor, wearables, halters, when is which best?
- Examples of normal rhythms, physiologic arrhythmias, artifacts, use of multiple leads, etc.
2nd Round: Resting ECG for practitioners (2:34 hours)
- How to diagnose arrhythmias?
- Characteristics of the different arrhythmias: Sinoatrial blocks, ventricular premature complexes, etc.
- When are the arrhythmias of concern during a pre-purchase exam or a poor performer?
- Case examples.
3rd Round: Exercise ECG for practitioners (2:24 hours)
- How to analyze your exercise ECG?
- Abnormal ECG readings (rest, exercise and post-exercise)?
- Case examples: Post-exercise sinus arrhythmia. APC’s during exercise, JVC´s during exercise, accelerate idioventricular rhythm, VPCs associated with AF, etc.
4th Round: Cases (2:32 hours)
- Case presentations with multiple ECGs including exercise, repeat exams and/or treatment and general discussion.
Speakers
Dominique De Clercq
after graduating in 1999, she worked at the clinic of Ghent University (Department Large animal Internal Medicine – Belgium). In 2008, she defended her PhD in equine cardiology and in 2012 she passed the ECEIM exam with success and became an EBVS-specialist in Equine Internal Medicine (Dip. ECEIM). Subsequently, she was the head of the clinic at the department of Internal Medicine at Ghent University. Since the end of 2019, she works as an ambulatory consultant – Equine internist specialist – in Europe and she works on regular basis in private specialized Equine clinics in Belgium and Germany. Her ambulatory consulting practice is focusing on cardiology, sports medicine and all topics of internal medicine.
Mary Durando
received her DVM degree from the University of Georgia before completing a residency in large animal internal medicine at the University of Florida. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal) in 1996 and completed doctoral work in Physiology at the Medical University of South Carolina with research on endotoxemia and endotoxin tolerance. After this, she completed two years in a cardiology/ultrasound training program in the Sports Medicine section at the University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center before taking a position as a Lecturer in Equine Medicine at the University of California, Davis for 3 years. Mary returned to New Bolton Center to work in their treadmill facility for 3 years, before working as an associate clinical professor in Large Animal Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Currently, she is a part owner of Equine Sports Medicine Consultants, an ambulatory consulting practice focusing on sports medicine and imaging, cardiology and internal medicine.
Inge Wijnberg
graduated from the Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 1990 with honors. During her study she received a doctorate certificate for the study period in the USA on radiology, anesthesiology, and intensive care in 1988. After 5 years in mainly private practice, she started in 1995 her residency Equine Internal Medicine at Utrecht University. She trained at New Bolton Centre at University of Pennsylvania in Equine Cardiology and ultrasound (1996). Since 1999 she is registered as Specialist KnMvD Equine Internal Medicine. In 2001 she obtained her PhD at the UU on a topic of clinical neurophysiology. In 2002 she became Assistant Professor Equine Internal Medicine at the same Faculty of the UU. Since 2004 she is a Diplomate of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine. Her areas of expertise are cardiology in patients and sport horses and was responsible for the development bachelor program veterinary cardiology amongst others. Other main topics are neuromuscular disorders/clinical neurophysiology and neonatal intensive care.
Lesley Young
graduated from the university of Liverpool in 1987. After a short spell at Glasgow, she attained her RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Anesthesia in 1990 and worked as a lecturer in anesthesia at Liverpool vet school until 1991 whereupon she moved north to gain a PhD in the effects of general anesthesia on the equine heart. Her interest in equine cardiovascular physiology then shifted slightly to the clinical cardiology of athletic horses and she ran a referral cardiology and sports medicine service at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, making significant contributions to applied clinical research in both equine cardiovascular function under general anesthesia and sports horse cardiology during that period. She obtained her RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Cardiology in 2000, was awarded a European Diploma in Equine Internal Medicine in 2005 and RCVS recognized specialist status in Veterinary Cardiology in 2006. Since December 2005, she has provided an ambulatory equine cardiology referral service to general practitioners throughout the UK and Europe. She was awarded an honorary chair for her work in equine cardiology by the University of Edinburgh in 2016.
