Participants will see experts in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic diseases working up horses with locomotion asymmetries, ataxia and / or riding unwillingness suspected to be due to a pathology of the neck on day 1 of the course. The instructors will discuss their approaches, findings, diagnosis, and treatment options as they present selected cases together on day 2. Day 3 of the course will be devoted to performing further examinations on selected cases and to improve skills. ATF credited this course 21 hours of Continuous Professional Education.

Saturday, September 25 | Practical work

Equine Clinic, Weilerswist-Müggenhausen | credited by ATF with 7 hours of CPD

  • 9:00 till 18:00 hours: Clinical lameness examination, radiographic and ultrasonographic evaluation of lameness in horses.

Instructors: Francesca Beccati, Andy Petric and Filip Vandenberghe

We will work on lameness cases at the equine clinic. The day will be divided into three sessions of 120 minutes each. In each of the sessions a new case is presented, but the group of participants changes (so the participants get an opportunity to experience each of the instructors); Horses will undergo routine clinical exam of each instructor (including diagnostic anesthesia as necessary), radiography, ultrasound, etc. Scintigraphy and magnetic resonance images of the horses will be available for some cases.

Sunday, September 26 | Case presentations

  • 9:00 – Selected cases worked from the day before will be presented (cases are filmed as the exams are being performed). This will include images and history. Participants can comment on the diagnostic and treatment options.

Monday, September 27 | Theory and practical work

You can select among the following skills: 1) Radiography of the neck; 2) Ultrasound of the neck; 3) Physiotherapeutic examination and treatment of horses with possible neck deficiencies; 4) Chiropractic examination and treatment of horses with possible neck deficiencies; 5) Infiltrating the neck

Francesca Beccati
graduated in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Perugia in 2007. She completed her PhD about comparison between radiography and ultrasonography for the diagnosis of osteochondrosis lesions in Thoroughbred yearlings in 2011. She based her training on orthopedics and diagnostic imaging, becoming an ISELP Certified Member in 2016. Since 2008 she has been working at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Perugia, working on referred cases for equine locomotor pathologies and poor athletic performance. Her research activities are aimed at comparative equine diagnostic imaging, neck, back and pelvis injuries and orthopedic and metabolic diseases of endurance horses. From 2017 to 2020 she did the residency of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) and in 2021 became a Diplomate of the ECVSMR and ACVSMR. She is an Ex-eventing rider with the goal to get back on the horseback!

Sue Dyson
graduated from Cambridge University, United Kingdom. She was Head of Clinical Orthopedics at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, England for many years until 2019 and is now an independent consultant for in-depth orthopedic evaluations and pre-purchase examinations of horses. She is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Specialist in Equine Orthopedics, a European Specialist in Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and Associate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. Sue has also ridden at top British level in Eventing and Show Jumping and has trained horses that have competed at the Olympics and World Championships.

Andy Petric
graduated in 2001 from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, Austria. Between 2001 and 2005 he worked in several veterinary practices and served as veterinarian in the Austrian army. In 2005 he did the Basic Chiropractic course at the International Academy of Veterinary Chiropractic in Sittensen, Germany, and attended several other chiropractic courses becoming a Certified Veterinary Surgeon specialized in chiropractic in Austria in 2008. In 2010 he did the Equine Osteopathy course with Stuart McGregor (Full Body Adjustment) and in 2012 the Acupuncture course of the Chi-Institute in Madrid, Spain. He founded his own equine practice in 2006 and provides the chiropractic examination and treatment to horses in all Central Europe.

Stefan Stammer
is a physiotherapist and a sports and gymnastics teacher. In 1999 he became an equine osteopath. Since then, he treats horses and has introduced a complete physiotherapy system to manage and keep sport horses performing well up to the international elite level and for rehabilitating them after injury. His biomechanical and therapeutical concept STAMMER KINETICS is part of the rehabilitation program at the University of Zürich and the International Academy of Veterinary Chiropractic runs an advanced course to learn about this concept.

Filip Vandenberghe
graduated in 2001 and joined immediately after the orthopedics department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Ghent University. In 2004 Filip joined the equine clinic Bosdreef and became partner in 2008. Over 15 years ago Filip pioneered amongst few others in the world, on the clinical use of standing MRI in the horse. In 2011 he was awarded Associate Large Animal of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. Filip has focused as well on the poor performance of the competition horse.
